Divine Experience! Holy bath to wash the sins…

So the story goes like this….

I was in the middle of planning solo bike ride trip from Bangalore to Kanyakumari(to be covered in another blog), when I stumbled upon an article on Rameshwaram. Once I read it, I was sold to the idea of including an extra day in Rameshwaram for the holy bath experience.

It’s believed that there are sixty-four Tīrthas (holy water bodies) in and around the island of Rameswaram. According to Skānda Purāṇa, twenty-four of them are important. Bathing in these Tīrthas is a major aspect of the pilgrimage to Rameswaram and is considered equivalent to penance. Twenty-two of the Tīrthas are within the Rameshwaram Temple. Taking bath in all these Theerthams purifies the body as well as the mind. It is believed that this water is holy and also have medicinal qualities.

I got up early, way too early to capture the sunrise over Rameshwaram sea and walked along the shore. Life does start early in Rameshwaram, I saw groups of people taking a dip in the sea, especially the area called “Agniteertham”. Soon enough the local guides approached me to check if I need to do any prayers or rituals, they can help me with that. I asked about the holy bath, one of them explained to me the procedure, gave his contact details and asked me to contact him if I want to use the guide. He quickly ran through the do’s and Don’ts. I arranged a time with him to meet a bit later and finished my morning walk.

The Holy Bath Experience

I met the guide around 7am at the agreed spot, this time without any camera or phone, only the cloths which are needed before and after the bath. He pointed out to the sea and asked me to take the dip.

Agnitheertham

A dip in the sea starts the divine experience, the Agnitheertham is one of the most important theertham.

Located on the beach side of the Sri Ramanathaswamy temple, Agnitheertham is the only theertham sited outside the temple complex. In the Sanskrit language, the word Agni means fire; while the word Theertham means holy water. Agnitheertham has been mentioned several times in the ancient texts and mythological legends as a pilgrimage of significant importance among the Hindus. The devotees visiting the theertham offer their prayers to the deity and atone their sins by taking a dip in the holy waters.

The water temperature was perfect, I took few dips and came out to follow my guide. We walked through the streets of Rameshwaram to the temple entrance, where we removed the slippers, got the entrance formalities sorted with temple officials, by passing 100s of people in groups. In a couple of minutes, we were in the temple courtyard.

The guide pointed me to the well # 1, 2 and 3 and instructed the helper. Helper pulled the small bucket of water from each well and poured over me. This continued for another 45 minutes, as we went well to well, navigating through the temple complex. The temperature of the teertham water varied depending on their location within the temple compound. After the ritual of bath completed, the guide told me to donate the clothS I was wearing during the holy well bath, change into a new pair of clothing (which involved lungi) and take the blessing from temple Darshan. I was told no to take anymore bath that day.
