First opened its door in December 2009, Junoon pronounced as “Ja-noon” means ‘passion’, shows the creativity and innovation of chef Vikas Khanna.
I was excited as soon as my travel plans for NY were confirmed and I was staying just couple of blocks away from Junoon. Wasting no time I booked myself table avoid any sort of disappointment.
Inspired by his story and cooking, I started following Vikas when he participated in various cooking competitions around the world and eventually he appeared as Judge and the Host for the Indian version of MasterChef. Vikas is not afraid of experimenting with his cooking, which makes him experimental chef and his restaurant most dynamic and exciting place to visit.
I arrived at about 7:00pm, the entrance lounge was elegantly decorated in soft tones, sandstone sculptures lit by candles splitting the restaurant in 2 dinning halls ‘Patiala Room’ and ‘Main Dinning Room’.
Once seated in the main dining room, menu was presented to me. There are two options available, 5 course and 3 course tasting menu and I opted for 3 course menu. A-la Carte option is available if one dines at the Patiala Room.
For the starter I selected ‘Saloni Machhi’, when served the plate was artfully decorated and seemed very appetizing. The flavours were delicate, salmon was seasoned well with the proper proportion of spices. It was gorgeous and simply delicious.
The main course was ‘Akhrot Murgh Kofta’ which was dished out with a choice of breads, rice and Raita. Succulent and juicy chicken dumplings dipped in the rich walnut cream sauce decorated with delectable prunes were a real treat to the taste buds.
Finally the dessert, a chocolate tart was a true delight. Tart was rich and dark, oozing nutty flavour, topped with cream and salted foxnuts. The tart was pure craziness.
Overall the food experience for me was 4.5 out of 5, however, it’s such a shame that the service didn’t live to the standards. I would rate service as 2 out of 5. Not a biggie, if I ignore the service aspect, I relished the food.
Would I visit again – yes for sure and this time I would try his recently opened restaurant ‘Junoon’ in Dubai.
